Position Overview
As the Head of Project Development, you will lead the entire lifecycle of renewable energy project development in Japan-from origination to ready-to-build. This is a strategic leadership role responsible for managing a multi-disciplinary team and coordinating with landowners, local governments, grid operators, EPC contractors, and internal stakeholders.
Key Responsibilities
Lead and manage the development pipeline of solar and BESS energy projects across Japan.
Oversee site identification, land acquisition, permitting, and grid connection processes.
Build and manage a high-performing team of project managers, analysts, and external consultants.
Manage relationships with key stakeholders including landowners, regulators, utilities, and local communities.
Ensure development milestones, budgets, and timelines are met, and risks are managed effectively.
Provide strategic input to investment decisions and contribute to business development strategy.
Coordinate with internal teams (e.g. engineering, finance, legal) and external partners to ensure smooth project progression.
Stay updated on regulatory and policy developments in the Japanese energy sector.
Requirements
5+ years of experience in project development within the energy sector, ideally with a focus on renewables.
Strong leadership and team management experience.
Deep understanding of Japan's permitting, land rights, grid connection, and regulatory landscape.
Strong communication and negotiation skills in both Japanese and English.
Demonstrated ability to bring projects from concept to financial close or construction-ready stage.
Degree in engineering, business, environmental science, or related field. MBA is a plus.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience in utility-scale solar, wind, or battery energy storage systems.
Existing network with local government bodies, landowners, and grid operators.
International exposure or experience working in a global organization.
