Position Overview

As the Head of Project Development, you will lead the entire lifecycle of renewable energy project development in Japan-from origination to ready-to-build. This is a strategic leadership role responsible for managing a multi-disciplinary team and coordinating with landowners, local governments, grid operators, EPC contractors, and internal stakeholders.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and manage the development pipeline of solar and BESS energy projects across Japan.

  • Oversee site identification, land acquisition, permitting, and grid connection processes.

  • Build and manage a high-performing team of project managers, analysts, and external consultants.

  • Manage relationships with key stakeholders including landowners, regulators, utilities, and local communities.

  • Ensure development milestones, budgets, and timelines are met, and risks are managed effectively.

  • Provide strategic input to investment decisions and contribute to business development strategy.

  • Coordinate with internal teams (e.g. engineering, finance, legal) and external partners to ensure smooth project progression.

  • Stay updated on regulatory and policy developments in the Japanese energy sector.

Requirements

  • 5+ years of experience in project development within the energy sector, ideally with a focus on renewables.

  • Strong leadership and team management experience.

  • Deep understanding of Japan's permitting, land rights, grid connection, and regulatory landscape.

  • Strong communication and negotiation skills in both Japanese and English.

  • Demonstrated ability to bring projects from concept to financial close or construction-ready stage.

  • Degree in engineering, business, environmental science, or related field. MBA is a plus.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in utility-scale solar, wind, or battery energy storage systems.

  • Existing network with local government bodies, landowners, and grid operators.

  • International exposure or experience working in a global organization.
