Job Description - Vice President of Business Development

Position Summary

Our client is seeking a Vice President of Business Development to join their growing team in North America focusing on the rapidly growing renewable energy sector. The Vice President of Business Development will be responsible for driving Growth by systematically identifying new markets and implementing strategies for creating project pipeline in these geographies, both through greenfield campaigns and project/ pipeline acquisitions. This is a strategic position focused on the development of Solar PV, hybrid (PV + BESS), and standalone BESS opportunities, with a sustained effort in evaluating opportunities and creating a differentiated project pipeline in IOU and ISO markets- PJM, SPP, MISO, NYISO.

Responsibilities

Duties include but are not limited to the following:

  • Responsible for delivering business development strategies with the aim of growing project pipeline.

  • Systematically undertake market research, create business case, and formulate entry strategies for developing projects in new markets. Understand market specific nuances related to grid, supply-demand, competition, and regulatory landscape, and come up with positioning strategies.

  • Work with and leverage internal teams and subject matter experts including power marketing and origination, transmission, development services, land, project finance, to form internal views and market positions.

  • Create alignment between existing project pipeline and new markets to consistently help shape the overall project portfolio.

  • Work with other development team members to implement greenfield campaigns in markets of interest.

  • Research, originate and maintain list of potential acquisitions, actively network with industry partners for co-development and outright project acquisitions.

  • For project acquisition, manage external relationships, orchestrate full due diligence with support from internal teams, work with power marketing, project finance and other internal experts to vet the opportunity, and lead to deal closing.

  • Work with internal and external stakeholders including legal, technical, financial, permitting and other advisors for both greenfield and project acquisitions. This includes being hands on with respect to land, grid, and permitting matters, including negotiations of various underlying agreements.

  • Handover of new projects, both greenfield and acquisitions to the development services team for ongoing development.

Qualifications, Education and Experience

  • A bachelor's degree in engineering, or major in energy related field or Energy Development education and background

  • 15+ years of relevant work experience in renewable energy project development environment

  • Requires intimate knowledge of the energy, and if possible renewable energy market, and the ability to stay current with changing technologies, regulations, and trends influencing the continued adoption of renewable energy.

  • Deep understanding of US Power markets

  • Hands on Utility Scale project development experience in ISO and non-ISO markets, with emphasis on PJM, MISO, SPP, NYISO

  • Significant relationships and contacts across US renewable energy development landscape

  • Ability to work with project financial models

  • Strong computer skills (MS Excel, Word, Power Point)
